Sacred Heart is inspired by the apparitions to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque in the late 17^th century. Christ appeared to St. Margaret Mary “with flames escaping from all parts of His Sacred Humanity, but especially from His chest, which resembled a furnace.” His Heart, “the living source of these flames,” was “surrounded by a crown of thorns and surmounted with a cross.”

Kingship—Christ’s, and that of France—is at the heart of the apparitions. The painting of the Sacred Heart emphasizes this through the flames escaping from the wounds of the crown of thorns form a crown of immolation.
