Inspired by the works of Sassoferrato, Zurbarán, and Titian, this devotional image of Our Lady depicts her as described by St. John in the Apocalypse, with “a crown of twelve stars” (Apoc. 12:1). A crown of roses acknowledges both her queenship and her title, “Mystical Rose.”
Lost in prayer, Mary gently folds her hands and casts her eyes downward, modestly indifferent to her own glory. Her expression is one of youthful dignity tinged with sadness.
Her glorious status as Mother of God, Queen of Heaven, Co-Redemptrix of mankind, and Mediatrix of all graces is hinted at for the viewer through her sumptuous clothing. Layers of lace frame her face while a blue satin mantle is fastened over her shoulder with a lapis lazuli stone set in gold.
